A bench-scale reactor was set up following the designing principles of external circulating fluidized beds. The reactor was made up with a master bed(f40 mm, 660 mm high) and an auxiliary bed(f80 mm, 600 mm high). Synthetic and industrial dyeing wastewater were treated in the fluidized bed. Increasing hydraulic retention time can increase effluent CODcr removal efficiency as water retention time is less than 4 h, while CODcr removal efficiency keeps 80% as HRT longer than 4 h. The change in influent CODcr and the thickness of biofilm shows no obvious effect on the effluent CODcr removal efficiency in the range of operating conditions tested.

Co-liquefaction of coal and sawdust was studied in the presence of hydrogen-donor solvent, tetralin. Coal samples were prepared through floatation of the Xinwen coal, followed by enrichment of maceral constituents. Sample I was rich in vitrinite and Sample II fusinite. Effects of reaction temperature, time and initial cold H2 pressure were studied on conversion, yield, especially oil yield, through comparison between these two samples. Because it is more difficult to be liquefied, Sample II, is greatly affected by changes in temperature and time. However, it is almost independent of change in initial cold H2 pressure, owing to the role of tetralin as hydrogen vehicle. Certain product(s) formed from thermolysis of sawdust can help hydrogenation of the intermediate (asphaltene and preasphaltene) in further forming oil products.

A new technology was developed to couple the anaerobic digestion of food wastes with production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Acetic, propionic, butyric and lactic acids were produced during food wastes anaerobic digestion and their concentrations reached 5.5, 1.8, 27.4 and 32.7 g/L, respectively under appropriate digestion conditions. The fermentative acids were transferred through a dialysis membrane to an air-lift reactor for PHA synthesis by Ralstonia eutropha. Dry cell concentration and PHA content reached 22.7 g/L and 72.6%, respectively. The obtained PHA was a copolymer of b-hydroxybutyrate (HB) and b-hydroxyvalerate (HV) with 2.8% (mole ratio) of HV units in polymer.

Tray efficiency of sieve tray in a gas–liquid–solid three system was studied in the laboratory. The experimental data of tray efficiency at different conditions were obtained. The results show that when the concentration of solid phase increases, tray efficiency first increases and then decreases. The experimental phenomena were interpreted and the method for estimating tray efficiency was verified by our data in three phase system.

This paper reviews investigations on the high-density circulating fluidized beds, which are compared to those on the low-density circulating fluidized beds. The authors believe that the study on hydrodynamics and other fundamentals of high-density circulating fluidized beds, especially in high-density downer, has a great future. Some key topics about HDCFB which deserve urgent, intensive attention are suggested.

The pseudomonas delafieldii strain R-8 and Rhodococcus erythropolis N1-36 were used to remove the sulfur from hydrogenated diesel oil. Both strains utilize the organic sulfur compounds from diesel oils with approximate activities. Surfactants can increase the desulfurization rate. When agitating rate was 250 r/min with Tween80 present, the strain can remove 72% of the organic sulfur from low sulfur diesel oil (S<300 mg/L) in 72 h. But when sulfur concentration was higher than 1000 mg/L, the sulfur removal rate of diesel oil by strain R-8 is very low.

Based on the systematical study of continuous resolution of DL-alanine employing the immobilized Aspergillus oryzae cell, the kinetics of the enzymic reaction was determined. Furthermore, the method of Newton-Raphson was applied to the solution of one-dimension-steady-diffusion model of packed bed for continuous resolution of DL-alanine. The calculated results of the model, with the error less than 10%, were in good agreement with those of experiments. It was demonstrated that the model was reasonable and accurate.

The oxidation of coal in supercritical water was investigated by using O2 decomposed in situ from H2O2 as the oxidant. The results indicated that the sulfur and nitrogen contained in coal were gradually converted into SO42– and N2 respectively by oxidation in the supercritical water medium. The coal oxidation became faster with higher reaction temperature and higher concentration of H2O2.

The extraction performance of Zn(II) from HCl medium with a new kind of carboxylic extractant, ammonized sec-octylphenoxy acetic (CA–12) and ammonization of the extractant have been studied. The influence of extraction temperature, initial concentration of extractant, etc. on the extraction is examined. The results show that the best conditions for ammonization of CA–12 with NH3.H2O are NaCl concentration of 1.0 mol/L in diluted NH3.H2O and ammonization ratio up to 80%. Distribution ratio D rises along with the decrease of equilibrium acidity and the increase of initial concentration of the extractant. The slope of lgD–pH curve is about 2. 0.01 mol/L Zn(II) is almost extracted completely from HCl medium under the condition of initial pH=6.0~6.5 and initial extractant concentration CHA>0.10 mol/L. The value of DH of the process was calculated to be 3.28 kJ/mol.

The main factors that affect the leaching rate of potassium in potash feldspar were studied. It is shown that the best reaction conditions are reaction temperature of 890~950oC, size of potash feldspar ores below 0.208 mm, and the weight ratio of sodium chloride to potash feldspar ores being 1. The study showed that the leaching process is controlled by the internal ionic diffusion of Na+ and K+ in potash feldspar. The relations between diffusion coefficient and reaction temperature is expressed by the Arrhenius formula: Deff=D0exp(-–Ea/RT), with Ea = 81.42 kJ/mol, D0=0.324 mm2/h.

In order to find the temperature range and initial reactant ratio for the maximum yield of acetylene, chemical thermodynamic equilibrium of heterogeneous multi-component C-H system was studied. All the thermodynamic equilibrium calculations are based on minimization of Gibbs free energy in the temperatures range from 500 K to 5000 K at intervals of 100 K. All species for which data are available in the JANAF Thermodynamic Tables are included in the C-H system. The Gibbs free energy minimization is expressed as a nonlinear optimization problem including equation and inequality constraints. The results show that it is irrational to consider the C-H system as homogeneous. Only the results from a heterogeneous system is realistic and reasonable and the best temperature range for acetylene formation is 3400~3800 K.

The percentage extraction in a single stage reached 99.80%. When 50 g/L Na2SO3 was used for stripping, the percentage stripping in one stage reached 82.45%, and gold was separated from iron by stripping operation.

Selective synthesis of lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium in N-limited submerged cultures was studied under different physiological conditions. Whereas lignin peroxidase was detectable only in a narrow range of nitrogen source concentration (0.8~1.8 mmol/L), manganese peroxidase reached considerable levels over a broad range (0.4~2.0 mmol/L). In the absence of Mn2+, only lignin peroxidase was detectable, which was also found when the concentration of Mn2+ was in the range of 0.06~0.84 mmol/L. High level of manganese peroxidase was obtained at very low concentration of Mn2+, and almost kept constant with the increment of Mn2+, but was repressed obviously when the concentration of Mn2+ was beyond 3.36 mmol/L. Pure oxygen increased the activity of lignin peroxidase by 50%, but had no obvious effect on manganese peroxidase.
